When my sister decided to write a book she told me she wanted me to create the cover and some illustrations throughout the text. She had a very specific style idea of what she wanted the images to look like and showed me cards and images that were close to the look she wanted. It took several rounds before I found the right style that most closely matched her ideas. At first I drew them freehand but when she told me they would eventually be needed in PowerPoint slides she wanted to aid in her talks and attended events I started creating everything digitally.
When creating her cover she gave me a general idea of what she wanted and left the rest to me. Since this was my first book cover, I approached it the same way I did trade-show displays; using eye catching and interesting enough imagery to inspire a closer look within 3-7 seconds. Once I had the concept, which included images used in the text, I wanted a hook and went with fun and unusual store names on the bags at their feet. I had a ball dreaming up the names and subsequently, they were successful in catching peoples attention. Lisa loved it and made very few changes.
When creating PowerPoint presentations, I had to keep with the look and feel of the book but give each one a look and feel of their own. She wanted mostly imagery and animation that would run behind her as she spoke. The only time words were used was when she wanted something she was saying to be highlighted. It was a challenge to create visuals to illustrate some very esoteric ideas and to make the more commonplace ones fun and different. Striking a balance between supporting her talk without overshadowing her was my primary goal, which I did succeed in doing.
